FUMIS - FUMIS biomass heating system control web page

Introduction

FUMIS is a family of products that have been designed to effectively and reliably control pellet boilers & stoves. ATech entered this market when a producer of pellet boilers was looking for a partner that had the knowledge to create a control system capable of realizing new control principles that no system available on the market was able to support. The right partner for this challenge had to have extensive knowledge in electronic motor controls, process control algorithms and communication protocols. The obvious choice for this challenge was ATech. The result of this project is a family of heating system controllers, optional modules and PC software that allow producers and installers efficient  wood biomass heating system configuration from simple stoves to complex high-power boilers integrated in building management systems.ATech’s design & manufacturing expertise is reflected in excellent performance, reliability and customer support.

FUMIS products & services

FUMIS controllers are available in three versions (for more details look at the Information Sheet):

  • FUMIS FD-compact; an integrated controller for smaller pellet boilers.
  • FUMIS FD-split; a controller for wood biomass boilers and stoves with a separated user interface with several optional features (see options)
  • FUMIS FP-OXY;  is a controller that allows to achieve highest-efficiency in sophisticated and high-power wood biomass boilers with several optional features

The variety of the parameters that influence the combustion process and the understanding of their  interdependence is critical in achieving the best possible performance from a biomass heating system. ATech offers to its customers a comprehensive set of tools and services to assist in optimising the heating system:

  • FUMIS PRO-PACK PC software (see under options)
  • On-site engineering support
  • FUMIS RCU GSM/GPRS remote control system (see under options)

Options

GSM/GPRS remote control

ATech has available a GSM/GPRS unit that allows over-the-air control and alarming functions. With its QUAD band technology it can be used wherever there is available a GSM network. This remote control unit with FUMIS controllers is extremely easy to install, connect and program.

User interfaces

The standard user interface of FUMIS controllers is a reliable, industrial type keyboard unit with membrane keyboard and LED display visualisation.Optional user interfaces available are:

  • LCD display with rotating knob selector
  • TOUCH screen
  • Radio Frequency (RF) remote control for communication within 100m and moreAn additional technology available is the visualisation of heating system information and control of key parameters on television.

FAN INVERTER

For heating systems where the customers want to achieve the highest performance over a wide range of fuel type and quality (typically for woodchip systems and those with dual fuel, ex. Pellets and corn) an optional inverter module is available for stepless control of the fan with the accuracy of approximately 0,2%.The advantage of using an inverter is also an significantly increased energy efficiency and lower noise of the fan motor.Inverters are available for capacitor run, shaded pole and 3-phase AC fan motors and there are also units to control BRUSHLESS DC fan motors. We suggest this option to be combined with the lambda probe or Under-pressure sensors options. In such combination the inverter technology provides the best effect.

LAMBDA PROBE & under-pressure sensor

LAMBDA PROBE

For the utmost accuracy in combustion efficiency control the control algorithm can use OXYgen measurement from the lambda probe. This option is strongly recommended for heating systems using biomass fuel with inhomogeneous characteristics (specific energy, moisture content, etc.), especially woodchips.

Underpressure sensor

The use of an underpressure sensor data reading allows FUMIS to accurately control the combustion at the point of maximum efficiency regardless of changes in chimney conditions, level of residues present in the system and other variables that affect the efficiency during operation of the heating system. This feature also make the performance independent on the quality of the mains power supply that otherwise affect the performances.

PRO-PACK software

This OPTION software that is supplied with a galvanic isolated hardware security interface (included) allows connecting a PC to any FUMIS controller via USB. The software running on the PC provides the following functionalities that make installations, monitoring, production set-up and R&D work much easier and faster:

  • PC connection via optically separated USB interface (included)
  • Flexible factory configuration
  • Fast installation set-up
  • Installation scan & data-logging on PC
  • Firmware download & re-programming
  • Re-programming via GPRS (with optional modem)
  • Intuitive user interface
  • Clear set-up visualisation.

Advantages

Why choose FUMIS products to control your biomass heating system? The answer is simple – FUMIS provides superior technical performance, flexibility, modularity, reliability and customer support.

Technical performance

Thank to its advanced control algorithms FUMIS products allow to achieve top class performance of wood biomass boilers and stoves. With FUMIS an accurate and stable combustion control results in very high efficiency and low emissions,  The PRO-PACK PC software  makes the fine-tuning of the performances fast and the set-up is immediately available to be reproduced on other units.

Flexibility

The numerous possibilities to adapt and customize the operation of your heating system  (with optional products and parameter setting) allow you to have the same basic product, same user interface and same service channel across all your product range.Various user interfaces, RF and GSM/GPRS remote control  are available to integrate the heating system control in a single house or large commercial building automation system. From stoves to boilers, from a few to several 100kW, from single house installations to remotely monitored heating plants with cascade control of several boilers FUMIS controls the combustion of pellets, woodchips, firewood and other solid biomass fuels.

Reliability

FUMIS products have been designed taking into account the demanding conditions in which they operate.  The electronics thermal performance was accurately planned during the design phase and extensively tested in thermal chambers and on the field in order to provide a long-life operation.FUMIS electronics has incorporated the »Fire-memory« function that stores the data in the event of mains down situation and safely restarts when mains are back in function of the status of the heating system.

Service/partnership

FUMIS customers have available a comprehensive and professional technical support from assistance in creating a combustion control algorithm to training of installation and service personnel.

Continuous R&D

Choosing FUMIS products to control your biomass heating systems you have entered into a partnership where continuous investment in research and design aimed to improve the products and services guarantees you to have always available a technically superior product.

FAQ

Q: Can FUMIS control a firewood boiler that applies wood gasification (pyrolitic combustion)?

A: Yes, FUMIS is being used for several different wood gasification boiler where it typically improves the performance by more than 30%.

Q: What is a »wood biomass heating system«?

A: It is a system that uses a fuel that is made of wood.

Q: What is »renewable energy«?

A: It is energy that comes from a source that can be renewed. In other words when the cycle is closed the impact on the CO2 level is neutral.

Q: Why is heating with biomass preventing global warming when the combustion still emits CO2?

A: Combustion of biomass is actually using energy of the sun that plants transformed in a combustible. Burning emits the CO2 that was used by the plant to grow the biomass and can be used again.

Q: What is the difference between pellets, briquettes, woodchips and firewood/logs?

A: FUMIS can control various heating system burning all the mentioned types of wood biomass. The most important technical differences between these types of wood biomass is the possibility to automate the feeding and burning process.

Q: Can FUMIS control pellet heating systems fuelled with non-wood biomass?

A: Yes, FUMIS products can control also the combustion of straw, corn and other solid biofuels.

Q: What is the benefit of using an underpressure sensor?

A: The benefit is that allows to implement an even more accurate control of the combustion and keep the heating system operating at maximum efficiency regardless of changes in chimney conditions, level of residues in the heating system and other variables that otherwise affect the performances.

Q: What is the benefit of using a lambda probe?

A: The benefit is in that the combustion control loop is based on the exact oxygen readings so the combustion is controlled in real time on actual performance. Available on FUMIS products as an option it is strongly recommended for heating systems using biomass fuel with inhomogeneous characteristics (specific energy, moisture content, etc.), especially woodchips.
