PCB Assembly and Production Process
The processes are organised according to the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards and are managed with ERP-type information systems which allow effective material and capacity resource planning, material and process traceability and accountability.
An overview of the PCB assembly process involved in building a surface mount technology (SMT) board using pick and place techniques.
There are several individual stages in the electronics assembly/production or manufacturing process of a printed circuit board. However, they must all work together to form an integrated overall process. Each stage of the assembly and production must be compatible with the next, and there must be feedback from the output to the input to ensure that the highest quality is maintained. In this way, any problems are quickly detected and the process can be adjusted accordingly.
PCB assembly process overview
The various stages in the PCB assembly process include adding solder paste to the board, the pick and place of the components, soldering, inspecting and testing. These processes are all required and monitoring is undertaken to make sure a product of the highest possible quality is created.
Solder paste: Before components are added to a board, the board must be coated with solder paste in those areas in need of solder. These areas are generally the component pads.
Pick and place: In this part of the assembly, the board with the solder paste moves into the pick and place process where a machine containing reels of components picks the components and places them in the correct position on the board. The components are held in place on the board by the solder paste. This is sufficient to hold them in position so long as the board is not disturbed.
To programme the pick and place machine, the required position and component information is derived from the PCB design information. This substantially simplifies the pick and place programming.
Automatic optical inspection (AOI): Machines that can inspect boards and detect poor joints, misplaced components and, in some cases, the wrong component are available.
THT – through-hole technology process: the components are inserted manually (placed by hand) into holes drilled in PCBs and soldered onto pads on the reverse side.
Test: We can test electronic products before they leave the factory: In-circuit test (ICT), Functional Test, Thermal stress test
